How Mine got their first-ever participation in continental football off to a blistering start when they dispatched lightweights Chuoni in a preliminary round, first leg match on a muddy Barbourfields Stadium here yesterday.
A brace from former Monomotapa United captain Kudakwashe Musharu, combined with a penalty from skipper Menard Mupera and Warren Dube’s effort, saw Chikurupati gain huge advantage ahead of the second leg in Zanzibar on Saturday.
How Mine could have, however, won by a huge margin had they utilised all the goal-scoring opportunities which came their way against a team which posed no threat at all.
With the pitch still damp from the heavy rains which have pounded the water-starved city in the last two weeks, both teams started off on a cautious note.
Dube had a penalty appeal turned down by Angolan referee Do Rossario Baltazar when the diminutive midfielder went down in the box, but the referee was not interested, eight minutes into the match.
With goals proving scarce, How Mine coach Philani Ncube decided to make a change five minutes before the break, taking out Muzanenhamo, who had already been booked, and bringing in Emmanuel Mandiranga.
The young forward did not take time to settle down and a minute later created the opening goal for How Mine with his second touch after coming in, his fine cross into the box finding Musharu, who tucked the ball beyond the reach of Suleiman to give his side the lead going into the break.
Barely a minute after the resumption of the second half, Baltazar pointed to the penalty spot when Musharu was floored by Ahmed Salum in the box, the Zanzibar defender going into the referee’s book for that infringement. Mupera calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net.
Mandiranga crafted the second goal for How Mine, his corner kick headed in by Musharu six minutes into the second period. Dube failed to put to good use a perfect chance to stretch the How Mine lead, his blistering effort sailing over the bar after being set up by Mandiranga.
With 11 minutes left on the clock, Chikurupati had their fourth goal, Dube finding the target with a powerful grounder from a free kick on the edge of the box, beating a diving Suleiman who could not get his hands on to the ball.
How Mine had other goal-scoring prospects coming their way which they again failed to fully make the most of with Mandiranga and fellow substitute James Chitereke the chief culprits.
Winning coach Ncube cried foul about the pitch and felt Bulawayo City Council could have done better work in preparing the ground for the match. On the missed opportunities, Ncube said there was nothing he could have done as he had finished his job as the coach.
Even with a four-goal cushion, Ncube believes that they should not relax ahead of the return leg as their opponents could spring a surprise by outscoring them in the return leg.
The How Mine coach made startling revelations that veteran defenders Gilbert Banda and Brighton Dube do not have passports hence they could not be selected for the match yesterday. Ncube said since it was hard to change a winning team, even if the former Highlanders defenders acquired the travelling documents, chances of them going to Zanzibar were slim.
Chuoni coach Ali Hassan blamed the pitch for his team’s loss, saying it affected his game plan. Hassan declared that they are going to win the return leg in their own country by a huge margin to overturn the How Mine score.
’’The ground was not good, it was a major problem, it was too wet and that affected our game plan. We expect to win at home by a lot of goals,’’ said Hassan.
How Mine goalkeeper Ephraim Mazarura and his defence were hardly tested by the tourists during the entire match.
